Sculptural Paintings

Through my experiments in layered painting, I was led to build up my work in a sculptural way. While in my days as a young, collegiate painter I worked thick, and created Art that extended off of the canvas. However, I created the extensions for their own sake. They did not grow organically from the compositional process. I ceased with these experiments and focused on developing a compositional method. This brought me back to exploring shape, color, and line relationships with a more two-dimensional application method. Years, my process led me to expand beyond the surface, opening the door to these three-dimensional explorations.

These pieces vary in size and thickness. All are acrylic and mixed mediums on canvas. The detail and intricacy of most of these pieces cannot be truly appreciated in a photograph. I have had jurors accept these pieces into shows from a photograph, thinking them to be traditional paintings, be truly surprised when they received a three-dimensional work of Art.
